"From now on, I'll connect the dots my own way"- Bill Watterson
This is exactly what multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) connectivity does for businesses, small and large. It allows them to rethink their computer and phone networks in ways that were not available even a few years ago. Here are some examples... A multi-location company based in New York City has branches in six states. After installing MPLS connectivity to branch sites all calls are routed through the main location saving thousands in calling charges and monthly phone service fees. When calls are made from the local offices, they appear to be coming from a local number. Also, the company now routes all their internet access through NYC, so they have better controls on usage, blocking time-stealing sites such as Facebook or inappropriate images.
A small retail chain of twenty stores can now better track inventory, time clocks, remotely control video surveillance, and give each store a few analog phone lines (this allows them to use their existing equipment) while automatically routing orders to the warehouse best suited to replenish stock via their MPLS Connectivity. Another company uses their MPLS connectivity to implement offsite backup between their locations (creating their own "mini" cloud service), saving them thousands of dollars monthly that can be put back into their business. Also, interoffice video conferencing saves the expense of having to outsource and bringing everyone in for meetings while not noticeably impacting bandwidth.
Most importantly, besides all of the whiz bang (and boring) stuff MPLS connectivity can do for your business, it automatically plays traffic cop to make sure business applications are prioritized with quality of service so phone calls never sound like a CB radio.
